About Pocketful of Meaning

A gentle place to begin

At Pocketful of Meaning, we craft gentle, science-informed stories and tools that nurture emotional wellbeing and spark moments of calm, connection, and wonder.

Big feelings don’t need fixing — they need understanding, reassuring words, and connection.

In everyday moments, when emotions feel messy, loud, or hard to hold, it can be difficult to know what to say or do.

Pocketful of Meaning exists to support those moments, with resources that feel human, grounded, and within reach.

How Pocketful of Meaning began

Pocketful of Meaning was created by Joanne Sorley, a psychologist and mum, blending years of professional experience with the realities of everyday family life.

Through her work, Joanne saw the same pattern again and again: people weren’t lacking care or effort — they were lacking language, reassurance, and support in the moment.

So instead of creating resources that lecture, overwhelm, or promise quick fixes, she began creating stories and tools that meet people where they are — in kitchens, classrooms, therapy rooms, and quiet moments before bed.

Pocketful of Meaning grew from that intention.

Psychology, made human

Our work blends psychology and storytelling to make emotional growth feel beautifully human.

Not clinical. Not complicated.
Stories help feelings feel visible.
Simple tools help words come more easily.
Repeated moments of connection help understanding grow over time.

This approach supports children learning to name their feelings, parents guiding them with care, and helpers finding their own calm along the way.

What makes our approach different?

Pocketful of Meaning resources are designed to be used, again and again, not just read and put on the shelf. They are created to:

  • Support real moments, not perfect ones
  • Grow understanding through repetition and relationship
  • Prioritise connection before correction
  • Feel gentle, doable, and emotionally respectful

We believe emotional learning happens slowly, through everyday experiences — not pressure or performance.

Our resources are designed to support, not replace, relationships, conversations, and care already present in children’s lives.

Our guiding frameworks

To keep emotional support simple and usable, our resources are built around clear, repeatable rhythms.

  • For Children

See It · Learn It · Use It

Children learn best when feelings are visible, named, and practised gently through stories, play, and everyday moments.

    SHOP FOR CHILDREN
  • For Parents & Helpers

    Notice · Name · Normalise · Support

Big feelings become easier to navigate when someone notices what’s happening, puts words to it, reminds us we’re not alone — and stays close.

    SHOP FOR PARENTS
  • For Adults

    Support for you, too

Support that honours pause, reflection, and care — designed to meet you where you are, without rushing or fixing.

A brand you can carry with you

The Pocketful of Meaning logo reflects what we believe.
Its pocket shape represents a reliable toolkit — something caregivers, parents, teachers, and helpers can carry with them into everyday moments. Inside the pocket, two handdrawn stars offer a quiet touch of wonder, symbolising what appears when children feel seen, supported, and understood.

Grounded typography and gentle lines echo the heart of our work: calm, connection, and care woven together.

Because emotional well being doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be carried with you — ready for the moments that matter most.

    moments for themselves

A final note

At Pocketful of Meaning, we believe:

Every creature has a place.
Every feeling can be faced.

Whether you’re reading a story, holding a card, or finding your way through a hard moment — you’re not doing it alone.

“Joanne’s story, Mia and the Missing Colours, creates a gentle and supportive space for children to explore their emotions. It helps children understand that every feeling has a place, while offering practical guidance for parents to continue these important conversations beyond the story.”
